Mental health is important for everyone. So know that if you’re facing a mental health challenge, you are not alone! “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” — Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Featured Artist for Recovery: Tanya

She shared her art and story with us at the #ArtinRecovery event last year. She does a variety of art, including graphic design, tee shirt designs, paint schemes for race cars and more. Tanya likes to be unique and different in her work. She goes by the name 'Lasing Creations' because no one has what she has. Tanya would like to do art full time. Her advice for someone just starting out is to keep going for it. Her late brother pushed her to reach her goals.

When I first got into recovery I had three guidelines for spiritual practice:

1) Do it every day, at the same time.
2) Do it no matter what you are feeling.
3) Make it about the process not the product.

My spiritual practice changed throughout the years. For a long time it consisted of writing three pages in the morning (Julia Cameron’s “morning pages” from her book The Artist's Way are a daily practice for many recovering people) and meditating every evening. Then it evolved into daily art/collage in my journal and movement as a meditation practice. Just like recovery, my spiritual practice had to evolve with me.

This is the practice: coming back to that self, again and again, for as long as it takes.

“I've been in recovery from addiction for 19 years… I never thought I'd be able to get 19 seconds of anything.”
Patricia first came to Harlem United a year into her recovery, hoping to not just survive but thrive, and one of the first programs that she connected with was art therapy. “Some things that I did were self-destructive and I’m not going to be able to cure that right away. Working on yourself doesn’t happen overnight.” #ArtInRecovery @harlemunitednyc

WHO SHOULD TRY ART THERAPY

Art therapy is a great choice for anyone struggling with substance abuse or mental health issues. Art therapy can help people of all ages who are recovering find new ways to express themselves. This therapeutic technique is very flexible, which makes it a great tool both for people just starting out their journey to recovery and for people looking to make new connections as they move into a life free from drugs and alcohol.

Art therapy is especially good for people who have trouble communicating with traditional methods like speaking or writing. Art gives them a voice where they feel they may lack it in other aspects of their life.

Paul Miller, a former professional photographer and poet, was working as a part-time security guard when he had a stroke. When numbness in his right arm and leg started, he drove himself to the nearby emergency room. There, it was confirmed—he was having a stroke.

Linda Odom, the director of Creative Connections, motivated his creative spirit and helped him find a new love for painting. Now, back at home, Paul continues to paint. He was recently surprised by his daughters at an art studio to celebrate his 80th birthday.

Mental health recovery does not occur overnight and neither does social innovation but the important thing with both is to keep going, keep listening, and not to give up.
